Academic Coaching For Neurodivergent Minds

Building Academic Skills for Lifelong Success: Personalized Coaching for Neurodivergent Learners

Services and Packages

At The Joy Mechanics, we believe every student is built for brilliance but sometimes they just need the right tools to get their engine running. We specialize in empowering students (ages 8+) to master their executive function skills, turning common learning challenges into sustainable habits. While we provide expert support for neurodivergent learners, including those navigating ADHD or autism, our academic coaching is designed to help any student find their rhythm, build confidence, and thrive in both school and home life.

For this reason, academic coaching can be booked as a single session or as part of an inclusive package. Consistent practice is the key to solidifying new habits and routines, so we encourage a regular coaching schedule. Please note that all sessions and meetings are conducted in English.

One session lasts up to 50 minutes, and the standard fee is 850 RMB. A single session can be used to work with your child or to meet with parents/caretakers (ex, teachers). We offer a variety of packages and services to ensure the right support.

For parent meetings, if translation support is necessary, please arrange in advance or provide 48 hours’ notice so we can arrange a translator on your behalf (an additional fee will be charged).

How It Works

From the first conversation to steady routines at home and school, here is how we partner with your family — one clear step at a time.

Discover

We start with a friendly 30-minute online discovery call. You share what is working, what feels stuck, and what you hope will change for your child at school and at home.

What happens in this step:

  • Clarify goals and current friction points together
  • Learn how academic coaching differs from tutoring or therapy
  • Decide whether a free demo session is the right next step

Go for a Test Drive

Not sure if this type of support is right for your child? We can have a 30-minute call and then schedule a one-to-one with your child, where we can take a “spin” to see if coaching is a good fit for your family.

Packages

Coaching is most effective when it is consistent, allowing new habits and routines to truly solidify. Although you can schedule an individual coaching session at any time, choosing a package provides additional advantages, such as:

  • Greater Value: Benefit from discounted rates and added services, such as parent meetings, school check-ins, or our custom Home Toolkit.
  • Consistency & Accountability: A committed schedule ensures your child maintains momentum, helping them reach goals faster.
  • A Proven Roadmap: Instead of short-term fixes, a package offers a structured plan designed for sustainable progress and peace of mind.

Our packages are designed to bridge the home-school connection, offering the flexibility to meet your family exactly where you are. To make longer-term commitments more accessible, we offer installment plans on our comprehensive packages. Click a package card to learn more.

Designed for families and caregivers, this service delivers a clear, actionable picture of your child’s abilities and practical strategies for support at home based on your psychoeducational report. It includes two 60-minute parent consultations and a custom Home Tool Kit.

The Diagnostic Deep Dive involves 3 parts:

  • Create a “Brilliance Blueprint”: We simplify the complex jargon in the multi-page findings into clear terms that explain the “why” behind a student’s struggles, build a compassionate understanding of the student’s unique brain architecture, and offer guidance on how we can develop their strengths.
  • Customized Home Tool Kit: Structures and strategies to support your child at home and at school, customized to your context.
  • Parent Training: We meet to discuss how to use the home toolkit, followed by a follow-up meeting to check progress and make adjustments when necessary.

The Mechanics of Our Partnership

To keep our coaching support running at peak performance, we have a few operational guidelines. By keeping our schedule reliable, we ensure that every student gets the dedicated time and focus they deserve.

Coaching Sessions

Scheduling Consistency: Consistency is the fuel for growth. Please provide at least 8 hours of notice for any cancellations. Sessions canceled with less notice will be charged at the full session rate.

Punctuality: Late arrivals will be honored but considered a full session regardless of the start time and will end at the scheduled time.

Documentation: Coaching sessions are recorded to provide detailed notes, which are shared after each session to keep parents and caregivers fully informed.

Operating Calendar: Our shop is closed on Fridays, during Christmas and New Year holidays, and throughout the month of July.

Schedule Maintenance: If you need to miss more than 3 consecutive sessions, we may need to release your standing time slot. Consecutive absences beyond the first session may incur a reservation fee equivalent to two sessions (exceptions for pre-scheduled holiday breaks and family emergencies).

Communication

Partnering: “Caregivers” include anyone providing close support to the child, such as teachers, tutors, or therapists.

Response Time: We will reply to your messages within 24 to 48 hours.

School Syncing: School check-ins are handled via email or, when necessary, a brief 15-minute video conference.

Packages

Validity: Packages are non-refundable and are valid for use for 6 months from the start date.

Structure: We schedule sessions in advance to maintain a reliable routine.

Installments: We offer installment plans on select packages. A 50% deposit is required at booking to reserve your coaching slot. If an installment payment is late, coaching will be paused until the account is brought current.

Commonly Asked Questions

Question: At what age is academic coaching suitable for?

Academic coaching is generally most effective for students aged 8 and up, when foundational executive function skills begin to develop more significantly. However, every child matures at their own pace. We tailor strategies to your child’s developmental stage. If you are unsure, our initial discovery call is the perfect opportunity to discuss their needs.

Question: How is academic coaching different from tutoring?

Tutoring focuses on specific academic subjects where the student needs help, such as math, reading, or science. Academic coaching focuses on developing broad learning and life skills — time management, organization, motivation, and goal setting — helping your child become an independent, self-aware learner across all areas of their education.

Question: How is academic coaching different from therapy and counseling?

Therapy and counseling aim to develop emotional awareness and address underlying psychological issues, with a focus on emotional healing. Academic coaching uses practical strategies, goal-setting, and accountability to help students overcome academic or organizational obstacles through a forward-looking, solution-based approach. We also work closely with parents and teachers for consistent support.

Question: My child has meltdowns and/or is emotionally sensitive — which is better?

If emotional sensitivity is the primary challenge affecting well-being, therapy and counseling are often the best first step. However, if meltdowns are triggered by frustration with schoolwork, poor organization, or feeling overwhelmed by tasks, academic coaching can provide the practical, calming structure they need. We are happy to discuss your child’s specific needs during our discovery call.

Question: My child isn’t really “neurodivergent” — do they need this?

Absolutely. Executive function skills are for everyone. In our fast-paced world, every student faces the challenge of managing distractions, organizing time, and staying motivated. Our coaching helps them build a personalized toolkit for life, regardless of their background.

Question: How long before we see results?

Deep, lasting change is a cumulative process that relies on a partnership between the coach, the child, and parents/caregivers. By reinforcing strategies at home, you help solidify new routines. Progress is often incremental — we prioritize establishing self-awareness and sustainable routines that support long-term growth.

Question: Do I need psychoeducational assessments before starting coaching?

No, formal assessments are not required. Our approach is strengths-based and focuses on practical executive function skills in your child’s daily life. While assessment reports can personalize our strategies, we can start by identifying strengths, challenges, and goals through our initial consultation.

Question: What if my child is defiant and will not partner?

Resistance often signals that a student feels overwhelmed or lacks ownership over the process. We prioritize connection over correction — listening, re-evaluating goals, and pivoting our approach until it genuinely resonates with them. We also work closely with you to understand underlying challenges and adjust support strategies collaboratively.

Question: Do you offer group coaching?

No — due to the personalization of coaching sessions, 1:1 meetings are more advantageous. General skill workshops and programs may be offered in the future based on interest.

Question: Can we pause a package?

Taking a week or two off for holidays or travel is understandable. However, a package expires 6 months after the start date. Sessions not used within that period are forfeited.

Question: Can we switch a package?

Yes. If a different level of support better fits your current goals, we can recalibrate your package at any time. Remaining unused sessions are credited toward your new package investment. Credits are non-transferable to cash or refunds.

Question: How do the installments work?

We offer a 50/25/25 installment plan for The Refuel, The Tune-Up, and The Engine Optimizer: 50% deposit at booking, 25% on the 1st of the following month, and 25% on the 1st of the month after that. The Full Throttle installment plan can be discussed at sign-up.
